Maria Atieno sits outside of her mud-walled home near Lake Victoria in Kenya and points to the graves of her three son's and their wives. All of her son's children have been left for her to care for. But how can she cope? She is an old women and can barely look after herself. Often she has to send the children out to beg for help from neighbours, many of whom can tell a similar story themselves and have little to give.
In Africa, there is no national health service, no unemployment benefit, few have pensions, and there is mass unemployment. Here are some examples of how Footsteps has helped people caught up in the problems of poverty and disability:
